About Us

Cardiff Met STAR is a group dedicated to helping refugees become accustomed to life in Cardiff and a different culture, far from their homes.

Thank you for your interest in this society.

Unfortunately this society is no longer running as the students who ran it have recently graduated or stepped down from their role.

In order for societies to continue we need students to run them, with support from the Student Union.

If you wish for this society to continue and would like to gain some skills for your CVyou and your friends can become this societies new committee members.

If you are interested in running this society please contact our Societies and Student Opportunities Coordinator Kevin and he will help you through the process kdoherty@cardiffmet.ac.uk

We are in the middle of the biggest refugee crisis since WWII.  We all may have become jaded seeing the same kind of headlines everyday, but the fact of the matter is this is a massive issue and it’s not going away anytime soon.  We at Cardiff Met have a great opportunity to really make a difference in a personal sense and I think that’s really important, because in the end we’re all human.

We are looking for students to volunteer at weekly sessions at Oasis Cardiff which supports refugees and asylum seekers living in Cardiff. The aim of the sessions are to help the refugees integrate into British society and to run an informal and basic English conversation club for those at the centre who wish to improve their English. The project would work as part of the national STAR (Student Action for Refugees) network of student groups working to improve the lives of refugees living in the U.K.

The project runs every Monday and Wednesday during term at 14:00-16:00 at Oasis Cardiff. (Sign up through: http://signup.com/go/hgXoZMF ).

This would be a great opportunity for aspiring teachers, those with a particular interest in supporting refugees and the local community or anyone wanting to develop their skills and employability.

We also do fundraise, educate and raise awareness throughout the year, and if you would like to get involved in these, please email us.

Our University has now put in place 2 full scholarships for Asylum seekers which we have achieved through STAR national's Equal Access campaign.
